What is Andropause?

What is Andropause

Women may not be the only ones who suffer from a change of hormones. Andropause is also known as “Male Menopause”, is a natural ageing process for men. Before men hit puberty, their testosterone levels are low. After they are sexually mature, it will increase. As they age, the level of testosterone in their body and the production of sperm gradually becomes lower.

*Testosterone is the hormone responsible for deep voices, muscle mass, and facial and body hair patterns found in males.

It is estimated that testosterone decreases about 10% every decade after men reach the age of 30. Approximately 30% of men who are in their 50s or older will experience a drop in testosterone production and symptoms of andropause. However, there are some men who are healthy, may have a healthy level of testosterone and may still be able to produce sperm well even in their 80s or later.

Causes

Andropause may be caused by stress, environmental changes, genetically modified foods, sugar, meat with estrogen added, and natural aging all have deteriorative effects on testosterone. Unlike women who experience rapid hormone loss during menopause, men experience andropause symptoms gradually over time.

According to a 2001 Study, approximately 20% of men in their 60s, and 50% of men in their 80s are hypogonadal.

Low testosterone can decrease strength and muscle mass. It can also increase abdominal fat and lead to obesity. These factors can cause diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and osteoporosis.

Symptoms

Andropause can cause various physical and possibly mental changes in a person. Although the symptoms may differ from person to person, there are a few common symptoms of men who experience andropause:

Symptoms of Andropause

  • Low libido (sex drive)

  • Low energy

  • Mood swings

  • Increased of body weight

  • Depression

  • Fatigue

  • Insomnia or difficulty in sleeping

  • Low self-esteem

  • Difficulty in concentrating

Men who are going through andropause may also experience tender breasts (Gynecomastia), size of testicles decreased or loss of hair, however these are some of the rare symptoms. Furthermore, andropause is also linked to osteoporosis. This is a condition that weakens your bones, causing your bones to be fragile and brittle.

Treatment

  1. Change of lifestyle

The most common and simple treatment for the symptoms of andropause is making your lifestyle healthier. A healthy lifestyle such as:

  • Healthy diet

  • Regular exercise

  • Stress reduction

  • Enough of sleep

These changes of lifestyle can naturally increase androgen hormones. After adopting these habits, men who are experiencing symptoms of andropause may see dramatic changes in their physical and mental health.
