The Best Hair Care Routine: How to Wash, Care & Style

Best Hair Care Routine

Experiencing hair loss or unhealthy hair? That may happen due to your hair care routine gone wrong. If you want to have healthy, strong hair, you will need to create a perfect hair care routine. Firstly you will need to determine your hair type. Secondly you need to get the right product according to your hair type. Last but not least, do the right washing, caring and styling routine.

Step one: Hair type

What's your hair type?

Maintaining a hair care routine is very important. It is similar to practicing a good skincare routine. We will need to determine our hair type, and based on that, we will know what is the next step to create the best hair care routine.

1. Straight Hair

Straight hair falls flat from the roots all the way down till the ends. It is usually soft and silky. However, women with this hair type easily get greasy hair as the oil speedily makes its way down.

2. Wavy Hair

This hair type has a combination of straight and curly hair. The texture of this hair type is usually rough, which makes it good in holding any kind of hairstyle.

3. Curly Hair

Curly hair is determined by prominent curls from the roots and it tends to be dry and frizzy as compared to straight and wavy hair. It also can be further segregated into 3 types of curls: loose curls, medium curls and tight curls.

4. Kinky Hair

Kinky hair is also known as coily hair or “African american” hair. This hair type is determined by very tight curls and it is quite fragile. It will break easily if it is not taken care of properly. Kinky hair can be further segregated into soft, wiry and extremely wiry.

It is not recommended to wash your hair everyday as shampoos will wash out the essential oils and moisture that could help to hydrate your hair. However, if you happen to fall in any of the factors below, you will need to consider washing your hair every single day.

Grease: Oily hair can attract dirt and pollution which results in clogged pores and the development of dandruff. Not to mention, your age, lifestyle, genes and changes in hormones will also affect your scalp to produce more oil.

Dust: If you tend to go out alot or work outdoors most of the time, your hair will be exposed more to dust and pollution.

Hair Types: As mentioned above, straight hair usually looks and feels greasy a lot quicker compared to other hair types

Lifestyle: If you travel outside a lot or exercise regularly, your scalp may be very sweaty

Furthermore, you may consider having extra nourishment, such as a conditioner or hair mask if your hair is dyed or bleached.

Step two: How to wash & style

There are different ways to wash different types of hair, we need to make sure that we don’t overdo it as all hair types have different texture.

As mentioned above, it is not recommended to wash your hair every single day. If you are with straight hair type, it is recommended to wash every once in 2 - 3 days. Of course, it varies from person to person. If your scalp is extra greasy, then you will need to wash your hair every day.

Straight hair will get especially greasy compared to other hair types as stated above. Therefore, you will need to use a shampoo that helps hydrate your hair to lessen the production of oil. As another option, you can go for specially tailored shampoos for oily hair. They mostly contain hydrating and exfoliating ingredients that focus and provide better help in removing the excess grease on your scalp.

As for conditioner, we will suggest going for a light conditioner that contains coconut oil or jojoba oil. Both of these ingredients help to nourish your hair and balance your hair’s moisture without weighing your hair. Applying conditioner avoids the roots of your hair. If you apply it on the roots, it will only worsen the greasiness on your scalp and make your hair look more flat.

How to style?

Straight hair is normally falling flat down from the roots to the ends, and we wouldn’t want our hair to look like that. By avoiding that, apply volumizing mousse on your roots, it will give a very nice volume to your hair.

It is suggested to wash once every 3 - 4 days if your hair type is wavy as it is often dry.

For wavy hair, you will need to start the routine of massaging your hair with oil one hour before washing it. It helps nourish your hair, and it can keep it really healthy and hydrated. After that, use natural hydrating shampoos (sulfate-free shampoo) to cleanse your hair. You will need to apply a conditioner every time you wash your hair. Lastly, apply oil at the shaft until the ends of your hair as wavy hair tends to have really dry ends compared to straight hair.

How to style?

You can use a leave-in conditioner for the waves to be softer and prominent. Apply it on damp hair, scrunch your hair with fists to give out those bouncy waves. Then leave it to dry.

Curly and kinky hair types have pretty much the same hair care routines. Both of these hair types are very dry and we need to prevent doing things that could make them even dryer.

Shampoos tend to remove the natural oil that helps to hydrate our hair. Therefore when you cleanse your hair with shampoo, you will need to focus more on the roots, it is best to avoid the shaft and ends of the hair. Deep conditioning is very important for both of these hair types, it provides nutrients and hydration to your hair and prevents them from getting frizzy and dry. Be sure to detangle your hair in the shower when applying conditioner, this helps to prevent it from breaking.

How to style?

To make it soft and bouncy, moisturizing spray can do the job. You can also use curl-enhancing products to make the loops more visible.

There’s no harm to having a healthy hair care routine as it will benefit in lessening the breakage of your hair and will also help make your hair even healthier.
